1938//54 KGVI The 2 volume collection of used postal stationery consisting of 108 items with an amazing and comprehensive array of the scarce and rare, fabulous destinations and virtually all commercially used. Highlights include 4¢ wrappers (6, one uprated with 4¢ definitive to France and forwarded internally, others to Switzerland and Australia, the latter censored in Dutch East Indies), very rare in used condition; 2¢ wrappers (6, one used internally, another uprated and censored to Missouri cancelled Christmas Day, printed matter rate and local usages); 2¢ postal stationery envelopes (very rare used), 5¢ ps letter card also rare, 5¢ envelope uprated with 5¢ definitives (3) to Madagascar with brown censor tape (possibly unique) and local censor hs, another to MEF, returned to sender as addressee deceased, one with boxed TRAVELLING BOX, another cancelled PILLAR BOX used to Reduit; 12¢ envelope (rare used) to Bombay cancelled Riviere Dragon; 3¢ postal cards including 2 censored, one with very rare Crown Passed EE/1 hs; 10¢ postal card, second printing to France and redirected to London, very rare used. Also an excellent representation of registered letter envelopes including the 20¢ uprated with 10¢ and 5R with military censor, scarce 20¢ third printing censored to Texas, another to London with censor label EE/6 in blue and the only recorded example, one other known on white paper. Unquestionably one of the finest collections ever assembled. 1939//45 Collection of 219 WWII censored covers mounted in 5 Godden albums. Volume I commences with the second earliest recorded hs on cover dated 31 AU 39 and including 11 SP 39 with Madagascar censors (rare), and a nice representation of early oval handstamps and labels; Volume II contains covers from 1940 with a very late use of Label Ia, rare “3” in double circle denoting posted in Pillar Box, incoming from Madagascar with censor labels and hs from both Madagascar and Mauritius, blue censor label to Johannesburg, another to the US, rare red boxed censor labels to Marseille, another to Oregon, a 3rd to Caracas and others on incoming cover from Jugoslavia bearing Egyptian censor label, cover to New Zealand and cover to California. Also orange boxed censor label and blank boxed label (rarest censor label) on incoming cover from Java; a second orange label on cover to Albany, NY and very rare black label on cover to Batavia; Volume III 1940-42 features boxed blue censor label to Capetown and Bloemfontein, black boxed label with strip of 4 5¢ Silver Jubilee, one with dot to left of Chapel; Volume IV 1942-44 with scarce unboxed black label (illustrated in Gladstone, Fig. 22), others to the US, Egypt and England; another to Buenos Aires printed on cream paper, label EE/2 and EE/22 both to Geneva; EE/2 on transit cover from Reunion to London; Volume V 1944-45 cover from Rose Hill to Wembley with EE/12 label and wax seal of the Chief Censor of Mauritius, 1944 to 21st Nyasaland Battalion, Kings African Rifles, East Africa Command on Government House stationery and self-censored by the Governor of Mauritius, a very rare 1945 OHMS local censored Rodrigues cover. E. /1 hs (3, one with additional ms initials); double oval PASSED BY NAVAL CENSOR (4, 3 in violet one on airgraph, the other in black); blue EE/4 label with red ms PC BD 23/2/43; unusual cover with BY SPECIAL/ Military Plane (FF establishing the wartime air service between Mauritius and East Africa using RAF Sunderland flying boats and carrying the officer who set up the post office which introduced the EA APO 70 military cancel; possibly the EKD of this cancel); 1943 Christmas Air Letter incoming from Mauritian Forces in Palestine; Air Mail Letter Card APO 88 (Kenya) with blue triangular PASSED BY NAVAL CENSOR, a second one to Scotland plus 2 in red; local OAS cover to Rodrigues with EE/ and APO73 censors and 2 unlisted military labels on Air Letters. 1940//45 Three volume World War II Collection of 81 censored covers to or from Box 1000, the Jewish Detention Camp at Beau Bassin. Volume I starts with very rare internal cover from the detainee’s convalescent home, Forest Side to Hut U, Box 1000, the only such cover recorded; incoming Airgraphs (2); local registered telegram (2) and receipt for outgoing telegram; several postal cards to West Virginia, Walla-Walla, Haifa, Tel-Aviv, Spanish Morocco, Buenos Aires, etc.; the only recorded example of the 20¢ postal stationery envelope (uprated and registered to London); incoming with very scarce blue censor label EE/8 and same with white label; blue EE/7 and white EE/9 both with stamps removed by examiner; incoming with black OPENED BY/CENSOR (B5, only 3 examples recorded); incoming from Iran with Iraq censor hs and EE/8 label. Volume II includes cover to Jugoslavia without camp censor; group of covers with triangular PASSED BY/CENSOR/B1/MAURITIUS (also B3, B4), some interesting destinations including Swaziland, Chile and Sweden; also philatelic local registered cover bearing 2¢ and 10¢ Postage Dues. Volume III features superb purple triangular B2 censor hs on early cover (5 FEB 41); incoming from Bohemia and from civilian internee in Prague with German, Egyptian, Mauritius and detainment camp censors, also from German and Swiss internment camps; incoming from Prague with Camp Commandant hs; a few incoming forwarded to Czechoslovak Training Depot East, MEF, one with s/l COMMANDANT DETAINMENT CAMP and 2 covers to “undercover addresses” to Czech forces. A fabulous holding and an excellent opportunity to obtain a sizable holding of these elusive items. Condition mixed as might be expected.
