The 1841-54 Penny Imperforate Issue exhibit in 4 volumes, beautifully mounted and annotated on 144 pages represented by stamps, covers, cancels, lettering and plate studies. Comprehensive treatment of shades including the effect of addition of potash, perforation trials, excellent covers with domestic uses including the only known “turned” cover, scarce and rare foreign destinations (Malta, Mexico, India, Netherlands, France, Canada, etc.). An excellent cancellation section with an array of the various postmarks with Maltese cross cancels in various colors, the London numbered crosses and the earliest known example on cover from Limerick, numbered cancels with scarcer numbers. Also assorted auxiliary markings including “Penny Post” and the only recorded example of the “Llanfihangel-Crucorney/Penny Post” marking on 1d imperf cover. The exhibit closes with methods used in plating the issue showing some matched pairs of the 1d black with 1d red along with an example from each of the plates 12-175 with covers and multiples, the transition from imperf to perforated issues and a selection of mourning covers. A lifetime of work but with room for expansion and perfect for an equally dedicated GB collector
